Bar Grating Sizes, Load & Span

Bar grating load capacity depends on the bearing bar size, spacing, construction and clear span between supports.

Industry designations such as 19-W-4 combine bearing-bar spacing, construction type and cross-bar spacing into a standard grating specification. Load tables should then be used to verify the selected bar size against the required span and loading condition.

Case Study : Galvanized Bar Grating Platforms for a Water Treatment Facility

This project required fabricated galvanized bar grating panels with multiple dimensions and equipment cut-outs for elevated maintenance platforms.

Project Requirement

A contractor required bar grating for maintenance platforms around pumps, pipes and treatment equipment.

The platform layout included different clear spans, panel dimensions and several openings around existing equipment.

Panels needed to be identifiable for installation according to the contractor’s layout drawings.
