ADA Grating Opening Requirements

Accessibility compliance depends on the finished opening dimensions and installation—not simply on the product being described as “close mesh.”

1. Maximum Opening

ADA Standards Section 302.3 states that openings in floor or ground surfaces must not allow passage of a sphere more than:

1/2 inch (13 mm) diameter.

2. Opening Direction

Where elongated openings are used, the long dimension must be perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel.

3. Verify the Actual Clear Opening

Bearing-bar spacing is normally specified center-to-center.

The actual opening therefore depends on both:

This should be checked using the final grating specification.

4. Check the Complete Installation

Meeting the grating opening requirement alone does not automatically make an entire walkway, platform or facility ADA compliant.
